The Union cabinet, lead by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given the nod to declare Kushinagar Airport in Uttar Pradesh as an international airport.

Kushinagar itself is a Buddhist cultural site and the airport is close to several Buddhist cultural sites such as Sravasti, Kapilvastu and Lumbini.

With the status of an international airport, the airport can offer air travelers improved connectivity and a wider choice of competitive costs.

This will boost national / international tourism and the economic development of the region, as per the report.

Kushinagar is located in the northeastern part of Uttar Pradesh, about 50 km east of Gorakhpur, and is one of the most important Buddhist pilgrimage sites.
