Japan Plans to Waive Tourist Visa Requirements For Some Countries

According to a media report, the government of Japan is planning to waive tourist visa requirements for some countries as part of a further loosening of border controls to combat the spread of COVID-19.

As per Fuji News Network, Fumio Kishida, the Prime Minister of Japan may decide on the easing as soon as this week, allowing individual visitors to visit Japan without using travel agencies.

Prior to the pandemic, 68 countries, including the European Union, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the United States, did not require tourist visas to visit Japan. Passport holders from these visa-free countries can stay in Japan for up to 90 days.

There is a good chance that countries that were previously exempt from visa requirements will be granted visa-free entry into Japan again.

Furthermore, the Japanese government may abandon a daily cap on arrivals by October 2022.

On a Sunday, Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Seiji Kihara stated that “a weak yen is most effective in attracting inbound tourism,” adding that more steps must be taken to attract foreign visitors.

Japan Eases Travel Restrictions

It is worth mentioning here that, recently, Japan has also eased the travel requirements for international travellers also increased the daily entry cap from 20,000 to 50,000.

Beginning on September 7, Japan will relax some of the strictest Covid-19 border controls among major economies by allowing non-guided package tours from all nations and allowing more than twice as many people to enter each day.

Moreover, visitors to Japan who have received three vaccination shots will be exempt from taking Covid-19 tests 72 hours before departure.
