Japan Airlines (JAL) has announced the addition of five weekly flights between Tokyo and Bengaluru starting in late October. This move comes in response to rising demand, as reported by Bangalore International Airport Ltd (BIAL).
Currently, JAL operates three flights per week on this route, connecting Tokyo with Bengaluru, often referred to as the Silicon Valley of India.
Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport (BLR) remains the only airport in Southern India offering direct flights to Japan, with Japan Airlines being the sole carrier on this route.
Meeting Growing Demand
JAL’s decision to expand its flight frequency is driven by the increasing demand for travel between South India and Japan. The airline will continue using its Boeing B787-8 aircraft, which features a two-class configuration and accommodates 186 passengers.
This expansion is aimed at enhancing passenger convenience and supporting regional economic growth. Satyaki Raghunath, Chief Operating Officer at BIAL, emphasized the strategic importance of this decision, stating, “JAL’s expansion at Bangalore Airport not only improves passenger convenience but also strengthens our commitment to connecting Bengaluru to major global centers of commerce and tourism.”
Connectivity Between Narita and Bengaluru
Apart from the enhanced connectivity, the Tokyo Jal has also announced the decision to expand the Narita-Bengaluru route reflecting Japan Airlines’ commitment to enhancing connectivity between Japan and India. Currently, JAL operates three flights per week on this route, but from late October, travellers can expect five weekly flights.
Significant Rise in Passenger Traffic
Since the launch of JAL’s Bengaluru service in April 2020, there has been a notable increase in passenger numbers. Last year, the airline transported 62,959 passengers on this route, marking a 167.55% increase from the 23,532 passengers in 2022. This substantial growth underscores the strong travel demand between South India and Japan.
Global Flight Network Expansion
In addition to the increased flights to Bengaluru, JAL is also expanding its global flight network. The airline plans to increase flight frequency to Southeast Asian destinations like Jakarta and Bengaluru, as well as Oceania (Melbourne) and East Asian cities like Shanghai (Pudong) and Taipei (Taoyuan). This expansion is aimed at meeting the strong demand for inbound travel and North America-Asia travel.
Conclusion
Japan Airlines’ decision to increase its flight frequency between Tokyo and Bengaluru highlights the growing importance of this route. The additional flights are expected to further strengthen economic ties and provide greater convenience for travelers between these two major cities.
