India To Arrange Evacuation Flights For Citizens Stranded In Ukraine, Cost Borne By Govt: Sources

As per some media reports, the Govt of India is planning to operate evacuation flights for Indian Nationals stranded in Ukraine and the cost of evacuation flights will be borne by the government of India.

Earlier today, Indian Embassy has issued a fresh advisory to stranded citizens and said the government is working on evacuation routes from Kyiv’s land borders with Hungary and Romania.

According to the advisory, the government has urged Indians stranded in Ukraine to carry “passport, cash – preferably in USD, double COVID vaccine certificate”.

The stranded citizens were also asked to carry take a “printout of Indian national flag and paste prominently of vehicles and buses while traveling”.

Ukraine Close Airspace For Civil Aircraft

The situation comes amid a war between Ukraine and Russia and due to the “potential hazard” Ukraine authorities on Thursday, 24th Feb 2022 imposed a restriction on flights operated using civil aircraft in its airspace.

The closure of airspace for civilian flights, lefts over 16,000 Indians, mostly students, stranded in Ukraine.

Travel By Transit Under India-Qatar Air Bubble

On Thursday, 24th Feb 2022, the Aviation Ministry of India said Indian passengers who are stuck in Ukraine can return via Qatar, but this will only be possible once Ukraine will open the airspace for Civil Aircrafts.

The Indian Embassy in Qatar said on Twitter; “Government of India, Ministry of Civil Aviation has allowed passengers traveling from Ukraine to travel by transit under India-Qatar bilateral air bubble arrangement.”

But, since the Ukrainian airspace is closed due to the Russian military offensive, it is currently not clear how they are to travel from Ukraine to Qatar to take Qatar-India flights, which are operating normally.
