The Union Health Ministry in India is reviewing the country’s pandemic situation due to an unexpected increase in COVID-19 cases in Japan, the United States, China, Brazil, and South Korea. As a precaution, the Indian government has resumed random sampling of international passengers at airports across the country for COVID-19 as of today, December 21.
A report by ANI, stated, “Random sample testing will be done for international air passengers arriving from various countries including China from today.”
The decision to restart the random Covid-19 tastings comes after a meeting convened by Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya to review the country’s Covid situation.
It is worth noting that India has identified at least three cases of the highly transmissible BF.7 Omicron sub-variant, which caused a surge in COVID-19 infections in China in October.
No New Rules For International Travellers
Dr VK Paul, Member-Health, NITI Aayog, said that no new mandate for international flights has been declared in India as of yet.
He also added that only 27–28% of India’s eligible population had received the precautionary dose of the Covid-19 vaccine. He advised people to get the vaccine and to wear masks in crowded places.
“People should wear masks in crowded areas. Those with comorbidities and old should especially adhere to this,” Paul said.
After the meeting, Mandaviya said Covid-19 is not over yet. “I have directed all concerned to be alert and strengthen surveillance. We are prepared to manage any situation.”
The minister was briefed on the global Covid-19 situation and the domestic scenario, including the preparedness of all stakeholders, at a meeting attended by experts and senior officials.
