Germany Plans to Simplify Citizenship Rules

The Govt of Germany on Friday announced that it has plans in place to “simplify” the citizenship process by allowing dual nationality and accelerating the naturalisation of immigrants.

According to a report by AFP, a spokesperson of the interior ministry confirmed that the ministry aims to unveil a draft law “soon” that will be submitted to the cabinet for approval.

Proposed Changes for Citizenship

According to the proposed changes, naturalisation would be possible after five rather than eight years of residency, or even three years for those who were deemed to have integrated particularly well.

If a parent is an immigrant and has been legally residing in Germany for at least five years, the child is automatically granted citizenship.

Not just that, the interior ministry of Germany also intends to make it simpler for people to possess multiple nationalities and to relax some language requirements for elderly immigrants.

When Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s centre-left coalition government took power a year ago, the revision of Germany’s citizenship laws was the key pledge made by Chancellor.

It comes at a time when Germany, a country of more than 80 million people, is facing a severe labour shortage in a variety of industries. The labour ministry predicts a 240,000 skilled worker shortage in Europe’s largest economy by 2026.

“We will create a modern citizenship law. To this end, we will make multiple citizenships possible and simplify the path to acquiring German citizenship,” said Scholz’s three-party in its coalition agreement.
