The European Union (EU) Commission has issued a significant update for international students planning to study in EU/Schengen Area countries. Starting in the first half of 2025, the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) will become mandatory for certain travellers, including international students from visa-exempt countries.
European Higher Education: A Top Choice
European universities and colleges are renowned for offering excellent short-term study opportunities, attracting students from around the globe. While the general entry procedures for students remain unchanged, the introduction of ETIAS will add a new layer of travel compliance.
Understanding ETIAS for International Students
From 2025 onwards, students from countries that enjoy visa-free access to the EU will need to apply for an ETIAS before embarking on their study programs. This new requirement aims to enhance security and streamline entry processes across the Schengen Area.
Key Points About ETIAS:
- Validity: ETIAS permits short-term stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period.
- Multiple Entries: With a valid ETIAS, students can enter the 30 participating European countries multiple times for short-term visits.
- Not a Visa: ETIAS is distinct from a visa and does not guarantee entry. Border authorities will make the final entry decision.
ETIAS vs. Student Visa
For students enrolled in programs longer than 90 days, a student visa remains necessary. But there’s a benefit to having an ETIAS even if you have a student visa. Once your student visa expires, you can stay in the EU for an additional 90 days with an ETIAS without needing to leave the country.
Longer Study Programs Require Student Visas
For students enrolled in programs exceeding 90 days, a student visa will still be necessary. However, ETIAS can facilitate extended stays after a student visa expires.
Upon expiration of their student visa, students can remain in the EU for an additional 90 days with an ETIAS, provided they are registered in the new Entry/Exit System (EES) launching this November.
How to Apply for ETIAS
Application Requirements:
- Valid Passport: Must be valid for over three months and issued within the last ten years.
- Email Address: Necessary for application communication.
- Online Form: Complete the ETIAS application online.
- Fee: A €7 fee applies.
Avoid Scams: Official ETIAS Website Only
Students are advised to use only the official ETIAS website to avoid scams. The authorization, once granted, will be electronically linked to the passport and will remain valid for three years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. Multiple applications are possible if needed.
What is ETIAS?
ETIAS, the European Travel Information and Authorization System, is an electronic travel authorization designed to improve security and manage the entry of visa-exempt travelers to the Schengen Area. The system aims to identify potential security risks and enhance border management.
Impact on Other Travellers
ETIAS will also apply to all other foreign nationals who are permitted visa-free entry to the EU. This broader application underscores the EU’s commitment to securing its borders and managing international travel effectively.
By staying informed about ETIAS requirements and procedures, international students can ensure a smooth transition to their studies in Europe. For more information, visit the official ETIAS website.
