According to data released on Tuesday by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Indian airlines carried 1.14 crore passengers in October 2022, a 10% increase over the previous month.

Also, the domestic air traffic increased nearly 27% to 114.07 lakh last month compared to 89.85 lakh the previous year. Notably, in September 2022, the air traffic number stood at 103.55 lakh.

After the coronavirus pandemic had a significant negative impact on the airline industry, air traffic has started to increase recently.

Akasa Air, which began operations in August, had a market share of 1.4% in October, up from 0.9% in September.

Air India had a 9.1 per cent market share in October, while SpiceJet and Go First had 7.3 per cent and 7%, respectively. AirAsia India’s market share increased to 7.6% in October, while Alliance Air’s increased to 1.3% during the same period.

“Passengers carried by domestic airlines during January-October 2022 were 988.31 lakh as against 620.96 lakh during the corresponding period of the previous year, thereby registering an annual growth of 59.16 per cent and monthly growth of 26.95 per cent,” DGCA said.

Air India Tops ‘On-Time Performance’

Air India, the airline which used to be at the bottom on the monthly ‘On Time Performance’ chart is now surprisingly topped the chart. Not only that, but data for domestic air traffic showed that all three Tata airlines — Air India (90. 8%), Vistara (89. 1%), and AirAsia India (both 89. 1%) — occupy the top OTP slots.

IndiGo, once India’s most punctual airline, trails these three Tata carriers, with 87.5% of its domestic flights departing on time.

According to the data, GoAir has been at the bottom of the punctuality charts for quite some time. Due to Pratt & Whitney’s inability to supply engines and/or engine components, dozens of IndiGo and GoAir aircraft have been grounded.

It is worth mentioning here that if a flight departs within 15 minutes of its scheduled departure time, it is considered punctual. The DGCA calculates OTP based on flights from four metro airports.
