The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) of India on Friday approved the summer schedule for the year 2022. According to the approved numbers, this summer Indian airlines are planning to operate more services than in the summer of peak pandemic 2020.

Only, SpiceJet and Trujet have reduced their departures from the pre-pandemic level.

The DGCA in a statement said that 25,309 weekly departures to and from 112 airports during the summer schedule.

“Out of these 112 airports, Gondia, Ziro and Pondicherry are the new airports proposed by the scheduled airlines,” the DGCA added.

Of the 25,309 weekly departures IndiGo will operate the maximum numbers of 11,130 flights, the departures per week for other airlines are;

  • SpiceJet (4,192)
  • Go First (2,557)
  • Air India (2,456)
  • Vistara (1,741)
  • AirAsia India (1,601)
  • Alliance Air (982)
  • TruJet (355)
  • Fly Big (158)
  • Star Air (137)

Among all Indian carriers, IndiGo has added most flights over the past year. The airline’s weekly departures increased by 1,046 to 11,130 flights during summer schedule 2022.

It must be noted that last year’s summer schedule, was run in the midst of a domestic flight capacity cap. Domestic flight operations were halted for two months, from March 25 to May 25, 2020, as part of the government’s effort to contain the covid-19 epidemic.

Domestic flight operations restarted in May 2020, with limited domestic capacity.

With such limits lifted in October of last year, airlines now have no impediments to operating at full capacity.

According to a senior airline official, summer travel may finally pick up, despite the fact that high oil costs continue to be a drag on the airline industry.

“We expect the pent-up demand (for travel) to unwind in the coming months, particularly over the summer holiday season,” said a senior airline official, speaking on the condition of anonymity.
