Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) in Delhi is set for a major transition as Terminal 1 (T1) will become fully operational from April 15, 2025. All flights currently operating from Terminal 2 (T2) will shift to T1, enhancing efficiency and passenger convenience.

Delhi Airport Terminal 2 to Temporarily Close for Upgrades

Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) has announced that T2 will be temporarily closed for four to six months to undergo refurbishment. This upgrade aims to enhance facilities and accommodate the rising number of domestic travellers.

Flight Transfers: IndiGo & Akasa Air to Shift to T1

At present, Terminal 2 manages approximately 270-280 flights daily, carrying over 46,000 passengers. Major airlines such as IndiGo and Akasa Air operate the bulk of these flights. As part of the transition, these flights will now depart from T1, with airlines receiving prior notifications to ensure a seamless shift.

DIAL’s CEO, Videh Kumar Jaipuriar, stated:

“We are pleased to announce that Delhi Airport’s Terminal 1 will be fully operational from April 15, 2025. This is a major milestone in improving passenger experience and meeting the growing demand for air travel.”

Upgraded Facilities at Terminal 1

The transition aligns with Delhi Airport’s modernization efforts under the Phase 3A development plan. Officially reopened in March 2024, T1 has undergone significant expansion, now covering 206,950 square meters—almost four times its previous size of 55,740 square meters.

Passengers can expect state-of-the-art facilities, including:

  • Advanced baggage handling systems for faster processing
  • Self-service check-in kiosks for smoother boarding
  • Automated security checks to reduce wait times
  • Direct Metro connectivity for seamless airport transfers
  • Enhanced lounges, shopping, and dining options for improved comfort

Delhi Airport’s Growing Capacity

With this expansion, IGIA is poised to become the first Indian airport capable of handling over 100 million passengers annually. Terminal 1 alone will accommodate up to 40 million travelers, complementing Terminal 3’s capacity and replacing the soon-to-be-vacant T2.
