The Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) in New Delhi, India, has made a mark in the global aviation industry by securing a spot among the top 10 busiest airports in the world for the year 2022.
The airport handled nearly 6 crore passengers in the last calendar year, making it one of the busiest airports globally.
According to Airports Council International’s (ACI) data, Delhi Airport ranked 9th on the list of the world’s busiest airports, beating Paris’ Charles De Gaulle Airport, which secured the 10th spot. The airport’s footfall of 5,94,90,074 in the past year is a remarkable achievement for India.
Climbing up the ranks
Delhi Airport’s current ranking is a significant jump from its past rankings of 13th and 17th in 2021 and 2019, respectively.
The airport’s constant efforts to improve its facilities and services have resulted in this achievement. It is now just behind London’s Heathrow Airport, which handled over 6 crore passengers in the past year.
The World’s Busiest Airports in 2022
Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport topped the list of the world’s busiest airports in 2022, handling over 9 crore passengers in the past year.
Dallas Fort Worth Airport (DFW), Denver Airport (DEN), and Chicago O’Hare Airport (ORD) secured the second, third, and fourth spots, respectively.
ACI also reinstated Dubai Airport in the fifth spot, achieving a rank of 5th (DXB, 66.1 million passengers, +127 per cent), Istanbul Airport reaching the 7th position (IST, 64.3 million passengers, +73.8 per cent), followed by London Heathrow Airport, Delhi Airport, and Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport in the 8th, 9th, and 10th spots, respectively.
US airports dominated the list, with five airports among the top 10 globally. These airports have significant domestic passenger shares, with 75% to 95% of their traffic being domestic.
