Covid-19: UK Extends Lockdown Till 17th July, 10 Days Quarantine For Visitors

The government of the United Kingdom on Saturday extends the nationwide lockdown till July 17 and also decided to quarantine international visitors from the high-risk countries for 10 days.

The decision comes amid the rising numbers of new Covid-19 variant infections.

The Telegraph reported on Saturday, “The British government has quietly extended lockdown laws to give councils the power to close pubs, restaurants, shops and public spaces until July 17,” The Telegraph reported.

The changes to the regulation governing coronavirus restrictions were made as part of a review of the third lockdown earlier this month by Health Secretary Matt Hancock, the Telegraph said.

It further added that the regulation, which applies to England only, was due to expire last week but has now been extended until July 17, around the date when school summer holidays begin.

On Friday, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the government could not consider easing lockdown restrictions with infection rates at their current high levels, and until it is confident that the vaccination program is working.

He also warned people that the coronavirus variant first identified in Britain may be more deadly than the older virus strain. According to the British government`s Chief Scientific Adviser Patrick Vallance, early evidence suggests the difference is between 10 deaths in 1,000 infected with the older variant to 13 or 14 in 1,000 infected with the new variant.

However, Johnson said that the current vaccines are still effective against the new variant.

The prime minister noted that there are more than 38,000 people in the hospital, 78 percent higher than there were at peak of the first wave, and more than 4,600 people have been hospitalized in the last 24 hours.

In the meantime, 40,261 people in Britain have tested positive for COVID-19, bringing the total number of coronavirus cases in the country to 35,83,907, according to official figures released on Friday. The total number of coronavirus-related deaths in Britain rose by 1,401 in one day to 95,981.
