The Canadian government announced on Friday that it has temporarily lifted the 20-hour-per-week limit on the number of hours that international students in Canada are permitted to work off-campus while classes are in session.

This comes as Canadian employers face unprecedented difficulties in finding and retaining the workers they require during this period of economic recovery and growth.

Limit on off-campus work hours to be lifted temporarily

Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship announced today that the 20-hour-per-week cap on the number of hours eligible post-secondary students are allowed to work off-campus while classes are in session will be lifted temporarily.

From November 15, 2022, until December 31, 2023, international students who are in Canada and who have off-campus work authorization on their study permit will not be restricted by the 20-hour-per-week rule

It should be noted that, provided their application is approved, foreign nationals who have already submitted a study permit application as of today will also be able to take advantage of this temporary change.

With the implementation of this measure, more foreign students will have the chance to work in Canada and more workers will be available to support Canada’s post-pandemic growth.

This temporary change recognises the significant contribution that more than 500,000 international students already studying in Canada can make to addressing our labour shortage while pursuing their academic goals.

Canada Embassy Issues Advisory for Students

Canada Student Visa

The Canadian Embassy in India on Thursday also issued an update for international students and said the border services officer will review their documents and also asked students to prepare to show that their DLI (Designated learning institution) has granted them permission to arrive late OR that they have received a deferral.

The Embassy also reminded students that, while some study permits allow them to work in Canada, they can only begin working once their course of study has begun, not before.

It is important to note that international students are only permitted to arrive in Canada one month before the start of their course. They cannot, however, work in Canada until their course is completed.
