In a groundbreaking move, the Canadian government’s new work permit program for H-1B visa holders from the United States garnered an overwhelming response, with the total number of 10,000 permits reaching its capacity within the first day of applications opening.
The initiative officially commenced on July 16 and was introduced as part of Canada’s ambitious immigration Tech Talent Strategy, aimed at positioning the nation as a global leader in various emerging technologies.
Canada’s Strategic Approach
“We’re enthusiastic about the ambitious goals we have set in immigration because they aren’t just about numbers – they are strategic,” stated Sean Fraser, Canada’s Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship, during the scheme’s announcement last month.
Exploiting US System Weaknesses
The Migration Policy Institute commended Canada’s innovative visa policy toward H-1Bs, as it skillfully exploits weaknesses in the US system.
By offering opportunities for spouses and family members and the potential for a permanent future, Canada aims to attract professionals affected by the wave of layoffs by US tech giants.
Response to US Layoffs
The surge in applications for the new program came in response to a significant layoff of highly skilled foreign-born workers, including Indians, in the US.
Companies such as Google, Microsoft, and Amazon have been reported to have laid off nearly 200,000 IT workers since November last year, leaving many H-1B visa holders in distress to find new jobs before facing potential deportation.
Program Details
Under this new policy, approved applicants for the work permit will receive an open permit valid for up to three years, granting them the freedom to work for any employer across Canada. Moreover, their spouses and dependents will also be eligible to apply for a temporary resident visa, along with a work or study permit as needed.
Cap Reached and Closure of Applications
The Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) confirmed that the 10,000 application cap for the new H-1B visa work permit was reached on July 17, 2023. As a result, the IRCC has now closed the application process, and no further submissions will be accepted.
Canada’s Global Talent Attraction
Canada’s progressive approach to target visa holders in another country highlights its commitment to attracting global tech talent, solidifying its position as a pioneering hub for emerging technologies.
With the aim to become a world leader in various tech fields, the country is dedicated to supporting professionals and their families in times of uncertainty and layoff crises in the US tech industry.
