Union aviation minister Jyotiraditya M Scindia and senior ministry officials showed up at the Delhi airport today for a check, following a flood of complaints on social media from commuters who had to navigate long queues and huge delays in checking in.

According to the aviation minister, he has directed authorities to re-enforce passenger movement regulations at the gate with the most passengers and to deploy “special officers” at every entrance.

Commenting on another issue of security Scindia said, we issued instructions today to increase the security from 13 to 16 lines. We plan to launch three new lines by the end of this month.

“We have taken this decision together, with all the stakeholders,” he said.

According to him, the pressure on the airport system should lessen in the ensuing 10 to 15 days because several decisions were made last week during meetings with the stakeholders.

“We have to start a new service delivery system as the number of passengers after the Covid pandemic has increased significantly,” he said.

On Sunday, several passengers were experienced lengthy waits at the Delhi airport. Many passengers took to social media to share photos of the crowd at Indira Gandhi International Airport’s Terminal 3 (T3) (IGIA).

4-Point Plan To Ease Congestion

Following complaints of overcrowding and long check-in lines, Delhi airport and the Civil Aviation Ministry have devised a four-point plan to decongest the airport. Jyotiraditya Scindia, Minister of Civil Aviation, met with officials earlier this week.

Here is the four-point plan for Delhi airport

1. The current 14 X-ray screening systems will be enhanced by adding two additional X-ray screening systems, people familiar with the matter said. This will take the total X-ray systems to 16.

2. The reserve lounge will be demolished and replaced with one ATRS machine and two standard X-ray machines. ATRS is an abbreviation for Automatic Tray Retrieval System.

3. Two entry points will be converted for passenger use: Gate 1A and Gate 8B.

4. Airlines will gradually reduce peak hour departures to 14 in order to de-bunch flights.
