Australia’s student visa fees have surged from AUD 710 to AUD 1,600, nearly doubling in cost. This increase, effective from July 1, 2024, has raised significant concerns, especially among Indian students.
The Indian government has already expressed its apprehensions, citing the financial burden this poses on aspiring international students.
Indian Government Raises the Issue
Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh confirmed in a recent Rajya Sabha session that the issue has been taken up with Australian authorities. “The matter has been taken up with relevant authorities along with other issues related to students,” he stated.
Why Australia’s Popularity is at Risk
Australia has long been a favoured destination for Indian students, with over 1.22 lakh students enrolling in Australian institutions from January to September 2023. However, tougher visa rules and higher fees have resulted in a 56% decline in student visas issued to Indians between October 2023 and August 2024.
Stricter Visa Policies in 2024
Several changes to Australia’s student visa requirements have made it harder for international students to gain entry:
1. Increased Financial Proof
Starting May 2024, international students must demonstrate a minimum of AUD 29,710 in living expenses, up from AUD 24,505. This increase reflects Australia’s rising cost of living and ensures students can sustain themselves financially while studying.
2. Higher English Proficiency Standards
From early 2024, students need a minimum IELTS score of 6.0, compared to the previous 5.5. This change emphasizes the importance of stronger language skills for academic success and integration into Australian society.
3. Reduced Post-Study Work Rights
Bachelor’s and master’s graduates can now only access a two-year post-study work visa. This reduction limits opportunities for graduates to gain valuable work experience and secure long-term employment in Australia.
4. Genuine Student Rule
Introduced in March 2024, this rule assesses a student’s intent to study in Australia by reviewing their academic plans, financial capacity, and genuine commitment to their chosen course, aiming to curb the misuse of student visas.
Impact on Indian Students
A recent survey by IDP Education revealed that 49% of students have withdrawn their plans to study in Australia due to rising tuition costs, while 35% cited high visa fees and living expenses as a major concern.
Exploring Alternatives
With Australia’s new policies creating hurdles, international students are now considering destinations like Canada, the UK, and Germany, where visa processes and costs remain relatively stable.
India-Australia Education Ties
Despite the challenges, the India-Australia Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA) continues to foster collaboration through initiatives like post-study work rights, youth mobility programs, and mutual recognition of qualifications. However, the recent changes could hinder future growth in student exchanges.
Conclusion
The Indian government is expected to maintain dialogue with Australia to address the rising concerns of students. As Australia tightens its visa policies, students may increasingly turn to other destinations offering more favourable conditions for international education.
