India’s youngest airline, Akasa Air, is making waves in the international skies, particularly in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the broader Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region.
Since its foray into the international market in March this year, Akasa Air has been expanding its reach and frequency of flights to various GCC destinations. The airline aims to increase daily flights to double daily, connect to Gulf cities from multiple Indian points, and capitalize on the upcoming unified GCC visa. All this while maintaining affordable fares.
Despite Boeing’s recent announcement of further delays in 737 Max aircraft deliveries, Akasa Air’s CEO, Vinay Dube, remains optimistic about the airline’s international expansion plans.
“We’re celebrating our second anniversary next year, and we’re already in five destinations in the region,” said Dube. “The Gulf is one of them, but we’re looking at expansion in every part of the world.”
Expanding Routes and Frequencies
Akasa Air currently operates flights to five international destinations: Abu Dhabi, Doha, Jeddah, Kuwait City, and Riyadh, all departing from Mumbai.
The airline aims to increase the frequency of its Gulf flights, potentially moving from daily to double daily services. It also plans to connect additional Indian cities to Gulf destinations, enhancing connectivity between the two regions.
Vinay Dube, Founder and CEO of Akasa Air, expressed optimism about the airline’s expansion plans, stating, “Our growth is aligned with the economic activities between India and the Gulf countries. As investment in the region increases, it’s natural for us to expand our network there.”
Supporting Gulf Tourism
The Gulf region is increasingly focusing on tourism development, and Akasa Air aims to contribute to this growth. “Many people don’t realize the hidden gems in Oman or the amazing holiday experiences in Ras Al Khaimah,” said Dube.
“You can enjoy top-tier hotels, water sports, and beautiful waters, all just three hours away from India.”
Expanding Operations
Praveen Iyer, Akasa Air’s Co-founder and Chief Commercial Officer, announced plans to operate more flights to the Middle East and Southeast Asia by the end of the fiscal year.
Operational Highlights
In the approximately 120 days of operating in the Gulf sector, Akasa Air has completed over 330 flights with an average passenger load factor of around 70%. The airline has also operated Hajj flights and facilitated connecting flights to various Indian destinations.
Competing in a Competitive Market
Despite the stiff competition from established Indian carriers, Akasa Air’s strategy revolves around service and reliability. “Our domestic and international operations are no different,” said Dube. “We know we have strong competitors, but we’re confident in our ability to create an exceptional customer experience.”
Fleet Growth
To support its ambitious growth plans, Akasa Air needs to expand its fleet rapidly. Currently, the airline operates a fleet of 23 Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft. It has placed orders for 202 Boeing 737 MAX jets, including 99 MAX 10s and 103 MAX 200s, with deliveries scheduled through 2032.
Boeing Delivery Delays
Boeing’s recent notification of delays in 737 Max aircraft deliveries has not deterred Akasa Air. The airline has already received two aircraft this year and expects to receive more in the coming months.
“We have a huge order book ahead, but we’ll continue to be among the fastest-growing airlines,” said Dube. “By 2032, we’ll receive the remainder of the 202 aircraft.”
No Immediate Plans for Leasing
Akasa Air has no immediate plans to lease additional jets. “Not right now,” said Dube. “This may change a few years from now, but currently, there are no such plans in place.”
Conclusion
Akasa Air’s rapid growth and expansion plans position it as a major player in international aviation. With a focus on affordable fares, increased connectivity, and fleet expansion, the airline is set to capture a significant share of global travel markets.
