In a bid to ensure the safe and efficient operation of its aircraft, Air New Zealand has announced its plan to conduct a passenger weight survey involving more than 10,000 customers travelling on its international network.
This initiative, mandated by the Civil Aviation Authority and will take place at Auckland International Airport and will cover customers departing on international flights until July 2, 2023.
By collecting accurate weight data, Air New Zealand aims to optimize its flight operations and ensure a secure and seamless travel experience for all passengers.
Essential Data for Safe Take-off
The weight and balance of a loaded aircraft play a crucial role in the pre-flight preparations. Air New Zealand Load Control Improvement Specialist, Alastair James, emphasized the importance of accurately determining the weight of various components on the aircraft.
“We weigh everything that goes on the aircraft – from the cargo to the meals onboard, to the luggage in the hold,” he explained. “For customers, crew, and cabin bags, we use average weights, which we obtain from conducting this survey.”
Extending the Survey to International Travelers
While customers on Air New Zealand’s domestic network were previously weighed in 2021, the airline now aims to extend the survey to international flyers. As international travel gradually resumes, it becomes imperative to gather up-to-date weight data to ensure accurate calculations.
Anonymous and Voluntary Participation
To address any concerns or hesitations, Alastair James assured customers that the process is completely anonymous and stress-free.
“We know stepping on the scales can be daunting. We want to reassure our customers that there is no visible display anywhere. No one can see your weight – not even us! It’s completely anonymous,” he stated.
Encouraging participation, James emphasized the simplicity and voluntary nature of the survey. By providing their weight information, customers will contribute to safer and more efficient flights on every journey.
Survey Logistics and Schedule
The survey will be conducted at the entrance to the gate lounge of specific Air New Zealand flights departing from Auckland International Airport. The data collection will take place between May 29 and July 2, ensuring a comprehensive representation of passengers during this period.
Air New Zealand’s commitment to safety and efficiency is at the core of this initiative. By obtaining accurate weight information, the airline aims to optimize flight operations, enhance fuel efficiency, and ensure that each aircraft is within the necessary weight and balance limits for a secure journey.
