Air India, which is now under the ownership of Tata Group, is making strategic moves to expand its operations in the United States. According to some reports, the airline is considering adding more destinations, with Los Angeles and Boston being among the potential cities for long-haul flights from India.

It is important to note that, Air India currently serves non-stop flights to five major American cities, namely Washington, DC, New York, New Jersey, Chicago, and San Francisco.

However, the airline is keen on exploring additional cities to extend its reach in the United States. Los Angeles and Boston are two cities being closely assessed as possible new destinations for Air India’s flights.

Factors Under Consideration

Starting new destinations involves a comprehensive evaluation of several key factors. Aviation industry experts highlight that fleet size, pilot strength, and traffic volume on the route are crucial aspects that need to be thoroughly examined.

Additionally, Air India is carefully considering the training and deployment of cabin crew and ground staff at potential new airports.

Catering to Indian Community and Tourism Demand

The decision to expand in the United States is also influenced by the substantial Indian diaspora and the popularity of the US as a tourism destination for many Indians.

The airline recognizes the importance of catering to the needs of Indian nationals and people of Indian-origin living, working, and studying in various cities across America.

Path to Revival under Tata Group

Since being acquired by Tata Group in January of the previous year, Air India has been on a revival path. The airline is taking significant strides to enhance its services and expand its fleet.

In February of the current year, Air India made headlines with one of the largest aircraft orders in the airline industry, securing 470 narrow-body and wide-body planes from Airbus and Boeing, with a total deal value estimated at USD 80 billion.

Outlook for the Future

Air India’s ambitious plans for fleet expansion indicate the need for a considerable number of pilots. As the airline gears up to operate the 470 aircraft supplied by Airbus and Boeing in the coming years, it is expected to require more than 6,500 skilled pilots to efficiently manage its operations.

Privatisation and Trust

The privatisation of Air India has proven beneficial, enabling the Indian aviation industry to tap into previously untapped markets. A senior Air India official expressed that trust in the brand, especially under the renowned Tata name, has played a vital role in facilitating the airline’s success and garnering support from the public and business partners.
