Delhi Airport Installed Over 500 Sensors To Ensure Social Distancing

Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport has installed a passenger tracking system – Xovis system with over 500 sensors at Terminal 3 to maintain social distancing.

The airport has installed 513 sensors at nine places in T3, including in all check-in rows, domestic and international security check areas and emigrations in the departure areas.

Another 16 sensors will be installed at the entry gates.

These sensors have been developed in such a way that it alerts 200 marshals and ground personnel at the terminal if physical distance norms are violated.

The system has already been installed at the GMR Group’s Hyderabad Airport.

“This has been done keeping in mind the anticipated increase in air traffic after air bubbles are broken and normalcy is restored,” a representative of DIAL, who didn’t wish to be named, told ThePrint.

“We are also evaluating some other technologies. As you might be aware that the Terminal 1 is getting revamped, so while this (Xovis) system is a tried and tested one, there is also something called computer vision technology our Hyderabad Airport has tried. We are also evaluating that for future uses,” Videh Kumar Jaipuriar, CEO of Delhi International Airport Limited, said at a press conference.

Only Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 of Delhi Airport are currently operational as flight operations remains below pre-COVID-19 levels.

How The Tracking System Works

In the Xovis passenger tracking system (PTS), passengers are counted and tracked anonymously using ceiling-mounted sensors.

The Xovis system calculates passenger density and if it goes beyond a particular level, it sends a signal to Delhi Airport operator’s team, Jaipuriar said.

The PTS receives data streams from the sensors and provides the airport operator with valuable key performance indicators (KPIs) such as waiting times, process times and passenger throughput.
